Worship Team

Worship is central in the life of the church: The Worship Team works with the pastor to respond with love to the diversity of needs in, and for, worship. They are responsible for providing a hospitality that brings the congregation together for the glory of God. 

Music: Choir, piano, organ

Worship Services: Communion, Baptism, Funerals, Sunday, Vespers, Ushers, Liturgist

Special Services: Goosebumps, Taize, Blessing of the Animals, 1850s, Advent and Lenten Brown Bag Concerts

Worship Space: Liturgical Dressing, Christmas Decorations, Easter Flowers


As followers of Jesus Christ, we seek to share our resources with the local, the national, and the global community. We will involve members of the congregation in responding to unmet needs through ministries of social justice, transformation of lives, and the reconciliation of people. 

Local Projects: Samaritan Ministry Social Service Desk; Winter Shelter SOS dinner volunteers and other homeless ministries, including support for Homeless United for Change and Salvation Army; Matheny/Withrow School Partnership; support to Church member's ministry to build schools in her home town in Laos;; membership/participation in: Habitat for Humanity, Illinois People's Action environmental/economic campaigns; the Covenant Network; Church Women United. Global Projects: Cuba Partnership and Caribbean Missions support; regular giving to Presbyterian Disaster Relief, support to African/Ethiopian Missions, Meals on Wheels.

Mission Activities: Cuba, Presbyterian Home, Matheny-Withrow Elementary School, Habitat for Humanity, Emergency Warming Shelter, Faith Coalition for Common Good, Laotian School

Spiritual Formation

The mission of the Spiritual Formation Committee is to provide spiritual leadership and support in shaping, designing, leading, and implementing programming to inspire spiritual growth in people of all ages. The members of this ministry work to lead First Presbyterian Church's educational ministries into the church's vision for sharing the gospel, transforming lives, growing in compassion and generosity, and becoming intergenerationally connected as a church family. This group has overseen and helped with events such as Rally Day, the annual Christmas Pageant, Vacation Bible School (VBS) and fundraisers for camp and programming for children and youth. 

Sunday School: Nursery, Children, Youth, ACES, Lectionary Class, New Members

Mid-Week: Tuesday bible study

Other: Vacation Bible School, Presbyterian Women, Officer Training, Adult Programming

Food, Fellowship and Fun

The mission of the Food, Fellowship and Fun Committee to provide a friendly, caring atmosphere where our church family can enjoy getting to know and nurture new members, welcome guests, and share joys and concerns.

Weekly: Coffee hour coordination, Wednesday pot-luck, Pool Night

Monthly: Luncheons, Garden Club, theology on Tap, Book Club, Poetry Group

Yearly: Picnic, Special Outings, PrideFest

As Needed: Fundraising, Prayer Chain


Administrative Functions

Finance: The Finance Committee is responsible for all the financial matters and dealings of the church, including such things as the preparation of the annual budget, overseeing the expenditure of funds, ensuring the church is protected by insurance against liability and property loss, conducting the annual stewardship campaign, and overseeing any capital campaigns.

Building and Grounds: Building and Grounds assists with the maintenance and repair of church property, develops plans for the future to improve the efficient use of energy of the church premises and to enhance the security of the church and its members. This ministry includes:Tiffany Windows, Sound and Video System, Holy Clippers Garden Group

Personnel: The Personnel Committee, in conjunction with the Senior Pastor/Head of Staff, has general oversight over both personnel and personnel policies of the church. They also provide both ongoing support to, and regular evaluation of, the church staff.
