About First Presbyterian Church

What We Believe . . .

Committed to worship and service in downtown Springfield, First Presbyterian Church seeks to embrace the community that surrounds it. We value the diversity of God's people, and we value each individual journey.

Our convictions, which reflect our Presbyterian traditions, stem from our faith. We believe that

  • the Bible guides us to an understanding of God's enduring love for all humankind.
  • through the Bible's teaching and the Holy Spirit's inspiration, our spiritual experience is deepened.
  • the Bible is more than literal truth; it should be read prayerfully, humbly, and with understanding of its historical and cultural context.

First Presbyterian Church serves and sells Equal Exchange Coffee through the Presbyterian Coffee Project. Equal Exchange is a fair trade network that helps farmers in Latin America, Africa, and Asia earn a fair income as well as find credit and technical support to improve or extend their businesses. The First Presbyterian Church Session (our governing body) has endorsed the "Charter for Compassion."

Now, more than ever, the time is right for the world to focus on compassion. Learn. Share. Act. Charter for Compassion
